How Many Times?

Rishani Sittampalam Semasinghe

While we revel in the cycles and habits of ever-persistent sin
We recall Your flesh was ripped into shreds… for us
While we gloat in our self-importance,
In our accolades,
our achievements, inflating our egos;
Those soldiers spat on You and mocked You:
I don’t understand how You can
Lay down Your life for a self-absorbed people.
How many times will You look upon frail humanity?
With tenderness to forgive?
When we repeatedly transgress against You?
How many times will You look upon our iniquity?
And pardon us still when we say we are sorry.
How many times will You look upon a sinful generation with grace
When You garbed Yourself with humankind’s sins
and Your Father turned His face from You?
How many times will we crucify You with our sins?
